Central idea:
The poem revolves around emotions like pain, death, and fear of separation. Most significant of all is the fear of loss and seperation. The mother daughter bond is threatened by aging that is fast approaching as she encounters the pain when she was taking her flight. The writer takes account of the life of her mother from when she was young to now the she is old and ‘ashy’ and how unbearable it is to see her approach the end. The poem touches upon the theme of filial bond between the mother and daughter smeared in the backdrop of nostalgia and fear. Nolatalgia of the past and fear of the future without her.
The poet also uses the squinting of the tree and the happy children playing around to symbolize energy, life and happiness.
She uses simile as she compares the looks of her mother to a corpse. She hides her sorrow as she smile and wave even though she cries inside.
